Biden’s Border Threat: President’s Ultimatum on Deportations Sparks Political Tension

via PBS

President Joe Biden has threatened to reduce deportations of illegal immigrants unless Congress approves funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a portion of which would support the release of border crossers into the United States and aid non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in resettling them.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that unless Congress passes the requested funds for border reforms and support, ICE operations will be curtailed due to budget shortfalls.

Jean-Pierre said, “Because congressional Republicans are choosing partisan politics over our national security and refusing to pass the bipartisan national security agreement that includes significant border reforms and funding, over the coming weeks, ICE will be forced to reduce operations because of budget shortfalls.”

“We have asked Congress for additional funding and resources, and every time Congress has provided less than we asked for, or most recently, completely ignored our supplemental request,” she continued.

This comes after a bill aiming to allocate significant funds for DHS and contracted NGOs failed in the Senate.

The bill included substantial funding for FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program and HHS’s Refugee Entrant and Assistance program, both of which are linked to NGOs aiding illegal immigration into the U.S. interior.

The current administration’s deportation rate has notably decreased, with data showing that only a small fraction of illegal immigrants have been deported in recent years.
