Barack Obama and Joe Biden have developed a close working relationship to help Biden defeat Donald Trump in the 2022 election.
While Obama had doubts about Biden running in 2016, seeing Hillary Clinton as a stronger candidate, he has now fully thrown his support behind Biden’s reelection bid.
Obama is in regular contact with Biden as well as White House officials, offering strategic advice on the race.
The two former presidents have differing personalities and policy disagreements, but bonded over their years working together in the Obama administration.
“The bad joke is, with President Obama, I would always say to him: Mr. President, all politics is personal,” Biden said previously, without ever explaining the joke.
Obama views preventing Trump’s return as critical and is prepared to aggressively campaign for Biden in the fall.
“And the Biden family rule applies: We’re always here for you, we always will be — my word as a Biden,” Obama said.
The pair will appear jointly at a major fundraiser this week, underscoring their united front in helping Democrats in the midterms.
“This notion that there was a red carpet available that, you know, Barack Obama blocked is just not based in reality,” said David Plouffe, a former senior adviser to Obama.
“Joe Biden would have run for president for the third time, for the nomination, would not have succeeded, and would have never been president,” Plouffe said.
