During a campaign event in Arizona, President Biden noticed a baby in the crowd and abruptly walked off stage to sit with the baby and its mother.
When he returned to the stage, Biden jokingly said he “couldn’t resist” the baby.
“Well, folks, I have to tell you straight up,” Biden said. “I like you all, but I couldn’t resist that little baby.”
Biden urged Latino voters at the event to support him again in the 2024 election against likely opponent Donald Trump.
He said Latinos were key to his 2020 victory. Biden’s interaction with the baby occurred as his campaign manager and a student speaker addressed the crowd.
The event aimed to boost Biden’s support among Hispanic voters, an important Democratic bloc where his approval has slipped.
“You’re the reason why in large part I beat Donald Trump [in 2020],” Biden said. “I need you badly.”
“I’m optimistic,” Biden said. “There’s nothing beyond our capacity.”
“Latinos proved in 2020 what we are capable of in Arizona and in so many critical states throughout this country, and we sent Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House the first time, and we’re gonna do it again in 2024,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez said.
Afterward, the Arizona Democratic chair took a swipe at Trump, calling him a dishonest businessman in legal and financial trouble. Biden won Arizona’s electoral votes in 2020.
“He’s a businessman,” chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano said of Trump, “but we’re seeing with all of his, you know, the juries that are coming out with all the convictions, everything that he’s doing.”
She added, “He’s not a smart businessman. He is underwater. He, you know, lies and cheats his way to this position that he’s in and I think sometimes people like, you know, they think that he’s a businessman, but we’re calling him out and they’re seeing the truth now.”
