Based on interviews with political experts and analysts, the 2024 presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is shaping up to be extremely challenging for Democrats.

While the election is still over a year away, most polls show the two candidates in a virtual tie.

Journalist Nia-Malika Henderson said, “The choice in November isn’t between two old men. It’s between an unhinged, wannabe dictator and a stable, well-meaning leader who believes in America’s bedrock principals of freedom and democracy.”

This has many observers worried given Trump’s narrow victory in 2016.

Experts express concern that the media continues to underestimate Trump’s appeal and focus too much on horse-race polling rather than the stakes of the election.

Some believe overconfidence by Democrats in 2016 could be repeated. At the same time, turnout from Biden’s base in recent elections provides some hope for Democrats.

However, most analysts interviewed feel Biden faces an uphill battle against the energized populist and nationalist forces that Trump continues to tap into.

With control of democracy itself hanging in the balance, the 2024 election is widely seen as the most consequential in modern American history.
