Republicans initially planned to focus on President Biden’s age following an investigation into his handling of classified documents.
However, Donald Trump’s controversial remarks on NATO shifted the conversation.
Trump suggested not defending NATO allies not meeting defense spending criteria, sparking backlash.

Trump said, “I’ve been saying, ‘Look, if they’re not going to pay, we’re not going to protect, okay? And Biden who said, ‘Oh, this is so bad. This is so terrible that he would say that.’ No.”
“One of the heads of the countries said, ‘Does that mean that if we don’t pay the bills, that you’re not going to protect us?’” he recalled.
Trump reportedly told the head of state, “That’s exactly what it means. I’m not going to protect you.”
Despite attempts to downplay Trump’s comments, the incident underscores potential risks and Trump’s repetitive strategy to normalize radical views on security.
