Senator Joe Manchin has shut down discussions about a potential third-party presidential bid, but he did mentioned Mitt Romney as a potential running mate.
Sen. Manchin said, “Hypothetically, if I was picking my running mate, really who I would ask right now is Mitt Romney.”
He also considered Sen. Rob Portman for the vice-presidential role.
“Rob’s a dear friend of mine. What a good man,” said Manchin about Portman.
During a public appearance in Cleveland, Manchin criticized President Joe Biden while keeping his 2024 intentions ambiguous.
Despite stating he is not running for anything, he acknowledged that a third-party run is a possibility.
“Guys, listen, I’m not running for anything,” Manchin emphasized.
“I’m basically running to try to get people involved,” he explained to reporters.
Manchin added, “Third party run, everything is on the table. Nothing’s off the table. I’m still evaluating all that. Super Tuesday [March 5] pretty much would be a deadline that tells you where you are.”
Manchin’s daughter has started a group, Americans Together, possibly for campaign preparations.
The event drew a bipartisan audience, and Manchin took swipes at Biden’s policies and age.
“First of all, if you want to blame Joe Biden, he’s totally guilty as charged on opening up the border and making it what we have today,” raged the West Virginia Democrat.
“And I’ve told him I’ve been disagreeing with him from Day One,” he continued.
Manchin also joked about teaming up with Romney, hinting at a possible collaboration.
