House Republicans impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his alleged role in the influx of illegal aliens at the U.S. southern border.
The vote marked the first impeachment of a Cabinet secretary since 1876.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson criticized the impeachment as baseless and unconstitutional, claiming that Mayorkas had been working on bipartisan border security solutions.
“House Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain rather than working to solve the serious challenges at our border,” spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg stated.
“While Secretary Mayorkas was helping a group of Republican and Democratic Senators develop bipartisan solutions to strengthen border security and get needed resources for enforcement, House Republicans have wasted months with this baseless, unconstitutional impeachment.”
“House Republicans have falsely smeared a dedicated public servant who has spent more than 20 years enforcing our laws and serving our country,” she said.
Democrats and the White House dismissed the impeachment as a political stunt and unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Mayorkas began amid concerns over illegal immigration and drug cartel activities.
House Republicans defended their actions as a solemn duty, citing the need to address the crisis at the border.
The public’s disapproval of the Biden administration’s immigration policies and handling of border issues was also highlighted.
