North Carolina’s lieutenant governor, Mark Robinson, made controversial remarks suggesting the arrest of transgender women using women’s restrooms and advising them to “find a corner outside somewhere.”

Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson said, “We’re going to defend women in this state. That means if you’re a man on Friday night, and all of a sudden Saturday you feel like a woman and you want to go in the women’s bathroom in the hall, you will be arrested — or whatever we got to do to you.”

Robinson later said, “if you are confused [about which bathroom to use], find a corner outside somewhere. I’m sorry, we’re not tearing society down because of this.”

These comments have drawn comparisons to the state’s infamous “bathroom bill” of 2016.

Robinson, a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for governor, has a history of controversial statements, including calling the Holocaust “hogwash” and making derogatory remarks about the LGBTQ community.

His remarks have sparked criticism from both Democrats and fellow Republicans.

Alex Baltzegar, a spokesman for Bill Graham, said, “His comments about the Holocaust being hogwash along with his demeaning comments about women will wreck GOP chances for regaining the White House and the governorship here in North Carolina.”

State Treasurer Dale Folwell added, “Mark Robinson is history’s latest example of someone trying to rise to power through hate.”

The issue of transgender rights has become a political flashpoint, with Robinson’s comments facing backlash from within his own party.
