Former Rep. Trey Gowdy, a FOX News contributor, emphasized the need for Republicans to resist compromising on President Biden’s border deal and instead push for a better agreement.
He highlighted that voting in favor of the bill means taking ownership of all its components, including both the good and bad aspects.
Gowdy also pointed out that with Biden’s handling of the law and the current political climate, it doesn’t make sense for Republicans to support the bill at this time.
“Trey, you have been around the block on some of these big bills that passed before you to vote yes or no. There’s often stuff in there that’s, well, just not good. From whatever point of view you’re taking. This, Republicans say, listen, the president is not enforcing the law currently. He is not dealing with the law that we have currently. And reversed executive orders from the Trump administration in the first day. What’s to believe if you sign on to this bill that he is going to enforce it then?” Bret Baier asked.
“It’s a pretty good question, Bret. You put your finger on it. When you vote yes, you own every single part of the bill. You know, Brit mentioned there are good parts and bad parts,” Gowdy said.
“But you own all of them. So if you are a Republican, and you look at the polling that you just put up. And this is one of Joe Biden’s biggest Achilles heels, why in the world are you going to bail him out?”
“I mean, I don’t know about the old days. But right now compromise has a really small constituency. Like incredibly small. Like maybe Kyrsten Sinema and that’s it. So, if you are not being asked, why aren’t you compromising more, you are asking why don’t you fight more politically just doesn’t make sense for Republicans to support this right now,” he said.
