U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has advocated for a path to citizenship for over eight million illegal aliens who have entered the country since President Biden took office.
She emphasized the need to address the undocumented population and create a reliable path for them to work and sustain themselves.
“One of the biggest issues that we have when it comes to immigration is the fact that we have an undocumented population. Now you can fix that by trying to build a wall, or you can fix that by trying to document people and create a path to citizenship,” she said. “And we’ll have folks that might say, look at these systems, you know that our shelter system has weight and things like that. But one of the reasons that our public systems experience weight is because people don’t have a documented and reliable path to work and sustain themselves,” she added.
“Just like all of our ancestors did and our grandparents and great-grandparents.”
Meanwhile, the Customs and Border Patrol reported over 3.2 million illegal alien encounters at the southern border in the fiscal year 2023, with expectations of exceeding 12 million by the end of Biden’s first term.
The increase in illegal alien entries is attributed to the reversal of the Trump-era Title 42 immigration policy.
Additionally, many processed individuals do not show up for their court dates, prolonging the asylum claims process.
