Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis faces criticism for the conditions at the Fulton County Jail, with at least 10 inmate deaths in the past year.
She blames state Republicans for focusing on her office instead of addressing state prisons.
Republicans highlight a backlog of cases in Willis’ office, tying it to overcrowding and violence at the jail. (Trending: Kid Rock Rages Against ‘Woke’ Target)
“Those state senators should worry about the state prisons,” Willis said, saying they “are out of control.”
“Willis will likely face scrutiny over her use of resources and strategy in addressing an enormous backlog of cases that grew worse during the coronavirus pandemic,” AJC wrote.
“The DA is required by Georgia law to have a grand jury inspect the sanitary condition of the jail and the treatment of inmates, and it isn’t clear she’s carried out that duty,” state Sen. Jason Anavitarte said.
“She did find time and resources to pursue politically chosen cases when the jail has been deteriorating, resulting in deaths.”
“We don’t know the root cause of the challenges, so anything would be premature at this point. We will follow the facts,” Sen. John Albers said.
“This issue is the conditions and deaths at the jail.”
There are discussions of potential impeachment and investigations against Willis, including the use of a law to dismiss local prosecutors.
A special Georgia Senate subcommittee plans to investigate the jail’s conditions, focusing on resource allocation and strategy amid a growing case backlog.
