Republicans and Democrats are in a deadlock over solutions to the migrant crisis, leading to gridlock on a supplemental spending bill.

The White House proposed a $110 billion funding request in October, including $14 billion for border security, but Republicans seek additional border policy changes. The Democrat funding would primarily send money overseas, which Republicans are not satisfied with.

Republicans want sweeping changes to the border, including heightened asylum standards and limits on parole, while some Democrats are open to raising asylum standards but have ruled out changes to parole. (Trending: Democrat Accused Of Blocking Release of Jeffrey Epstein Flight Logs)

The administration is open to negotiations and compromises but has limits on changes that could limit asylum and parole.

“You’ve got to change the asylum system,” Sen. Lindsey Graham said.

, R-Ky., was clear that anything without border policy changes would not get Republican support.

“Fixing a badly broken asylum and parole system isn’t ‘hijacking’ the supplemental. It’s strengthening it,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

“Securing our southern border isn’t extraneous to our national security. It’s essential. I know some of our Democratic colleagues understand this.”

“I am willing to make significant compromises on the border. We need to fix the broken border system,” Biden said.

“We’ve presented proposals that address the situation, that provide real practical solutions and also do not do violence to our fundamental values,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated.

“We are a country of refugees. We do have asylum laws. We do have refugee laws. We abide by our international obligations that are long-standing,” he said.

“And so that is my response to that.”

“Some of the [Republican] proposals are reasonable and worthy of discussion. Others are, frankly, not,” he said.

“They have to figure out whether they want to negotiate or whether they want to make take-it-or-leave-it demands,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said.

The border remains in chaos, with record-high migrant encounters and over 22,000 migrants in custody as of Wednesday morning.
