Ahead of his upcoming professional fight, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson issued a serious warning to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, emphasizing that the stakes will be high during their match on July 20.
Speaking at a press conference at the Apollo Theater in New York City, the 57-year-old Tyson expressed his determination to demonstrate that he remains a formidable fighter, despite facing an opponent 30 years his junior.
“I really like Jake a lot but once he’s in that ring he has to fight like his life depends on it, because it will be,” said Tyson. Set to take place at the Arlington, Texas venue of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, the heavyweight match will consist of eight two-minute rounds, with both fighters wearing 14-ounce gloves.
The results of the bout will be recorded in the professional boxing records of both competitors.
Tyson, who advocated for the shorter rounds to enhance the intensity and entertainment value of the fight, responded to critics who questioned the wisdom of his boxing comeback.
“The people who said that wish they were up here,” said Tyson. “Because no one else can do it. Who else can do this? Who else can shut the sporting world down, no one else can do it. So you got the both of us.”
“We’re friends, but in that ring we’re not going to be friends.” Tyson expressed his immediate readiness and eagerness to step into the ring against Paul. “It was a no-brainer,” said Tyson.
“He was the new up and coming guy on the scene and I like shaking the sports world to it’s core and I’m doing it now. It’s just something I want to do.” A 27-year-old YouTuber who transitioned into boxing, Paul has achieved victory in nine out of his ten boxing matches, securing six knockouts against a variety of opponents including celebrities and average fighters.
In February 2023, he experienced his first defeat in his boxing career, losing via split decision to Tommy Fury, the half-brother of the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
Paul emphasized the importance of not underestimating Tyson. “Age doesn’t matter, age is just a number. He’s a killer, he’s a warrior, he’s been doing this his whole entire life. So it’s second nature to him. I’ve been doing this for four years,” Paul said.
Paul hinted that Tyson is undervaluing him and proudly claimed to possess greater strength than the individual who was once regarded as one of the most intimidating figures globally.
“I know it’s going to be tough, I know I’m going to have to fight through adversity, I know I might even go to the canvas,” said Paul.
“I’m scared, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not about the fear stopping me, it’s about going into it even though I am scared and that’s what true bravery is.” Tyson and Paul are scheduled to attend another press event in Arlington.
