Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) vetoed gun control legislation passed by Democratic lawmakers, including an “assault weapons” ban.
The ban had targeted popular semiautomatic pistols like 9mm and .45 caliber guns if they had a detachable magazine and threaded barrel.
Youngkin said in his veto statement that the Constitution precludes banning broad categories of firearms widely used for lawful purposes like self-defense.
“The Constitution precludes the Commonwealth from prohibiting a broad category of firearms widely embraced for lawful purposes, such as self-defense. Despite this, certain members of the General Assembly have pursued legislation banning most contemporary semiautomatic firearms and specific ammunition-feeding devices,” Youngkin said.
State Senator Creigh Deeds (D) criticized Youngkin’s veto as “shameful and unthinking,” referring to bills banning “assault style weapons” and restricting guns on college campuses that were vetoed.
Youngkin’s action rejected Democratic efforts to pass new limits on semiautomatic firearms and magazines in the state.
“News this afternoon that 2 more of my bills, prospectively banning assault style weapons, and keeping guns off college campuses are being vetoed. Shameful and unthinking action!” Deeds wrote.
