At a House Oversight Committee hearing on the impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, tensions flared when former Hunter Biden associate Tony Bobulinski testified.
Bobulinski accused Hunter’s lawyer and the Bidens of criminal acts related to business dealings.
“Corruption statutes, RICO and conspiracy, DARA,” Bobulinski said.
In response, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez launched into a heated diatribe criticizing Republicans for pursuing what she calls an illegitimate impeachment.
She argued they had not proven a specific impeachable offense.
“Clearly, what we are seeing here today is a continuation of the 15-month saga of the Republican majority lost in the desert impeachment 101,” AOC said.
“The majority party, or whomever is raising impeachment, must accuse the president of a high crime a specific high crime or misdemeanor,” she said. “This entire impeachment inquiry is based on an actual, provable individual who has lied.”
“Hunter Biden’s defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, weaponizes letters to Congress to try to smear my name and make the cold hard facts in an attempt to save his powerfully connected client and his father. I challenged Mr. Lowell to make those claims on national television so he can be held accountable for his lies,” Bobulinski said.
The GOP-led House had opened an impeachment inquiry focusing on Biden’s handling of foreign affairs and his family’s business ties, including Hunter’s role at Ukrainian company Burisma during Joe Biden’s vice presidency.
Hunter and others’ international business activities have been federally investigated regarding taxes and lobbying.
Democrats largely view the impeachment as politically motivated ahead of the 2024 election, while Republicans argue it ensures presidential accountability.
