Young writer Coleman Hughes appeared on The View to defend his new book arguing for a colorblind approach to racial issues in America.
While initially having a respectful discussion with Whoopi Goldberg about treating people without regard to race, Sunny Hostin took a confrontational tone, alleging Hughes is being used as a pawn by the right and is a charlatan.
“My argument is that we should try to treat people without regard to race, both in our personal lives and in our public policy,” Hughes said.

“He’s not a Republican,” Alyssa Farah Griffin cut in.
“You said that you’re a conservative,” Hostin said. “How do you respond to those critics?”
Hughes denied this, noting he has voted Democrat and is independent, saying no one is paying him to take his views.
“I don’t think I’ve been coopted by anyone. I’ve only voted twice, both for Democrats,” Hughes said. “I’m an independent. I would vote for a Republican, probably a non-Trump Republican if they were compelling.”
“I don’t think there’s any evidence that I’ve been coopted by anyone, and I think that’s an ad hominem tactic people use to not address really the important conversations we’re having here… I have an independent podcast, I work for CNN as an analyst, I write for the free press. I’m independent in all of these endeavors and no one is paying me to say what I’m saying. I’m saying it because I feel it.”
As a Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient who has testified against large-scale reparations and backed away from support for Black Lives Matter, Hughes says he expresses his views independently based on factors beyond just race in issues like policing.
The discussion highlighted tensions surrounding Hughes’ advocacy for moving beyond race-focused policies.
