Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs’ homes were raided this week as part of a federal human trafficking investigation.
Combs has a history of supporting Democratic politicians, including campaigning for President Biden in 2020 and urging him to select a Black woman as his vice presidential candidate.
“This week has been great,” Combs wrote in 2017. “Shout out to the king Barack Obama!!! #BlackExcellence”
“White men like [Donald] Trump need to be banished,” he later said.
In 2020, Combs endorsed Biden while criticizing both major parties for not doing enough for Black Americans. He launched a third party focused on Black voter issues.
Combs’ lawyers maintain his innocence against the “meritless” human trafficking allegations and criticized the “gross overuse of military-level force” in the raids.
“Yesterday, there was a gross overuse of military-level force as search warrants were executed at Mr. Combs’ residences,” attorney Aaron Dyer said. “There is no excuse for the excessive show of force and hostility exhibited by authorities or the way his children and employees were treated.”
There has been “no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations” and called them a “witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.”
However, Combs has leveraged his celebrity status over the years to advocate for Democratic politicians and policy positions focusing on racial issues. The raids relate to an ongoing federal investigation into human trafficking allegations.
