Kristen Welker of NBC’s Meet the Press found herself at the center of allegations that she misled viewers regarding her knowledge of Ronna McDaniel’s hiring as an NBC contributor.
Welker stated her interview with McDaniel predated the announcement and that she wasn’t involved in the hiring.
“This interview was scheduled weeks before it was announced that McDaniel would become a paid NBC News contributor. This will be a news interview. And I was not involved in her hiring,” Welker said.
However, reports indicate Welker met with McDaniel and NBC executives in February to discuss a potential contributor role, contrary to her portrayal.
While an NBC insider said Welker was isolated from hiring talks, the situation raised questions about her early awareness.
“Kristen was not part of those talks. She was fenced off and insulated from discussions about a potential contributor agreement,” one inside source stated.

McDaniel’s addition provoked criticism from MSNBC personalities like Rachel Maddow and Nicolle Wallace, with Maddow likening it to “putting a mobster in a DA’s office.”
McDaniel stepped down as RNC chair in February amid fundraising issues and pressure from Trump.
