Hunter Biden skipped out on a court hearing on motions to dismiss criminal tax evasion charges against him.
Hunter’s attorney Abbe Lowell argued the politically motivated charges should be dismissed, while the prosecution called Lowell’s arguments “fact-free.”
“When you don’t have the facts you attack the law. When you don’t have the law you attack the facts. When you don’t have the facts or the law, you attack the prosecutors,” Special Counsel Attorney Leo Wise said.
“These are fact-free pleadings,” Wise said.
Wise defended the prosecution against Lowell’s claims.
The judge did not rule but will decide the dismissal motions by April 17th, with the next hearing set for May 29th.
Hunter has pleaded not guilty to the nine tax charges stemming from an investigation into over $1.4 million owed in unpaid taxes from 2017-2020.
Hunter “engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019, from in or about January 2017 through in or about October 15, 2020, and to evade the assessment of taxes for tax year 2018 when he filed false returns in or about February 2020,” Special Counsel David Weiss alleged.
Hunter “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills,” and in 2018, he “stopped paying his outstanding and overdue taxes for tax year 2015,” Weiss said.
Lowell is also seeking dismissal of separate gun charges against Hunter in Delaware.
The tax charges originally stemmed from a plea deal that fell apart, requiring Hunter to plead not guilty.
