The US Department of Justice is preparing to file an antitrust lawsuit against Apple on Thursday.

This marks the third antitrust suit against Apple in the past 14 years but the first accusing the company of illegally maintaining its dominant position.

The suit is expected to be filed in federal court in New Jersey.

If filed, it would escalate the Biden administration’s antitrust efforts against large tech companies, following suits against Google, Meta, and Amazon.

The DOJ is accusing Apple of violating antitrust laws by restricting rivals’ access to hardware and software features of the iPhone.

Apple shares fell over 1% on the news.

The case stems from an investigation opened in 2019 under the Trump administration but took a back seat while related legal action by Epic Games against Apple progressed through the courts.
