SpaceX has reportedly held a $1.8 billion classified contract with the US National Reconnaissance Office since 2021 to develop a network of hundreds of spy satellites.

The NRO is part of the US intelligence community and Department of Defense.

The contract is for SpaceX’s Starshield unit to operate satellites in low-Earth orbit that can take extremely detailed images of Earth and track ground targets, sharing information with US intelligence.

When operational, this network could allow the government to swiftly obtain imagery worldwide.

While details aren’t clear on timeline or other companies involved, the revelation demonstrates SpaceX’s deep involvement with US intelligence agencies.

The NRO spokesperson confirmed it is developing the most capable space-based intelligence system.

“The NRO is developing the most capable, diverse, and resilient space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance system the world has ever seen,” the spokesperson stated.
