Paris organizers for the 2024 Olympics will not provide traditional air conditioning in the Olympic Village, instead relying on more sustainable cooling methods due to design features and a natural groundwater system.

The building facades are oriented away from sun exposure and feature efficient insulation, while cold water from 70 meters underground will circulate through flooring to lower temperatures.

“We designed these buildings so that they would be comfortable places to live in in the summer, in 2024 and later on, and we don’t need air conditioning in these buildings because we oriented the facades so that they wouldn’t get too much sun during the summer, and the facades, the insulation is really efficient,” said Yann Krysinski, head of delivery of venues and infrastructure for the games.

The goal is to cut the carbon footprint in half with natural cooling even during heat waves.

Some countries like Australia and Greece will still bring portable AC units.

After the Games, the neighborhood is planned to house 6,000 residents featuring schools and transportation links while maintaining the sustainability focus.
