During a visit to the Texas border, Trump praised Governor Greg Abbott and indicated he is under serious consideration as a potential 2024 running mate.

After touring the border area of Eagle Pass, which has seen increased illegal crossings since Biden reversed Trump policies, Trump told Hannity that Abbott is “absolutely” on his shortlist.

At the border, Biden called on Trump to support a bipartisan border bill, but Trump and allies rejected it for granting too much power to Mayorkas while still allowing thousands of illegal entries.

“The bill also includes $1.4 billion for cities and states who are providing critical services to newcomers, and would expedite work permits for people who are in the country and qualify,” the White House stated.

Critics took issue with the White House referring to illegal immigrants as “newcomers” in discussing the bill, arguing the term inappropriately frames those who crossed illegally.

They pointed to the killing of a U.S. student by an illegal immigrant as evidence the border crisis is not merely newcomers but a catastrophe enabling criminal threats.

“The Biden White House is now referring to illegal immigrants as ‘newcomers.’ Joe Biden is not serious about stopping the illegal immigration into the United States. This is a catastrophe by design,” House Republicans wrote on X.

“This is ABSURD. He has no interest in putting an end to this invasion. He just wants to use more of your tax dollars to aid and abet it,” Rep. Tom Tiffany wrote.

“A newcomer just brutally murdered Laken Riley along with 100,000 other Americans every year from fentanyl poisoning. Your government hates you,” Turning Point’s Charlie Kirk said.

“While touting the $1.4 billion dollars of taxpayer money they want to spend on feeding and housing illegal immigrants, Biden’s @WhiteHouse just referred to illegal crossers as ‘newcomers,’” Sen. Mike Braun wrote.
