President Joe Biden is considering new executive actions to address record migration at the southern border after Republicans blocked border legislation.
The administration is exploring using provisions from federal immigration law, potentially invoking Section 212(f) to deny entry to those deemed detrimental to U.S. interests.
“No executive action, no matter how aggressive, can deliver the significant policy reforms and additional resources Congress can provide and that Republicans rejected,” assistant White House press secretary Angelo Fernández Hernández said.
“We continue to call on Speaker Johnson and House Republicans to pass the bipartisan deal to secure the border.”
Biden’s executive order may restrict asylum claims for migrants crossing the border illegally.
The failed legislation aimed to give DHS power to shut down the border when daily crossings exceed certain thresholds.
Border encounters hit a record high in December but dropped by 50% in January.
The issue is a major concern for voters in the 2024 election, with most adults criticizing the government’s handling of the situation.
Democrats and Republicans differ in their views on the reasons for migration to the U.S.
