A woman in Illinois has been arrested and charged with human trafficking and involuntary servitude for holding and exploiting four Mexican migrants at her home.

She brought two women and their children into the US, took their belongings, and forced them to work to pay off a continually growing “debt” while controlling their living conditions.

This included preventing a toddler from sleeping and making a teen miss school.

She also threatened to kill their family members if they did not comply.

The victims were rescued and the sheriff’s office emphasized that human trafficking is a real problem that traffickers exploit vulnerabilities for gain, making victim rescues and accountability a top priority.

Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “Human Trafficking is a real problem across the United States and right here in Lake County.”

“I am thankful these four victims were saved from their abuser and are no longer living in fear. Traffickers prey on the vulnerabilities of their victims. They exploit their victims for personal gain,” he continued.

“Our Special Investigations Group has rescued a number of victims over the last several years, and rescuing victims while holding traffickers accountable remains a top priority,” added Idleburg.
