Due to Congress failing to pass a border funding bill, ICE has drafted plans to release thousands of detained illegal migrants and slash its detention bed capacity in half to deal with a $700 million budget deficit.
The move would reduce beds from 38,000 to 22,000.
DHS blamed Congress for rejecting border security funding that risks current removal operations.
“Most recently, Congress rejected the bipartisan national security bill out of hand, which will put at risk DHS’s current removal operations,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated.
“A reduction in ICE operations would significantly harm border security, national security, and public safety,” they added.
Border crossings are expected to spike this spring/summer.

House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the situation.
Border authorities have encountered over 1 million migrants already this fiscal year, with December’s total surpassing 300,000 for the first time.
Texas has sent over 100,000 migrants to sanctuary cities struggling to cope with the influx, including New York, Chicago, and Denver.
