The House voted on a resolution condemning rape and sexual violence committed by Hamas against Israel.

It received broad bipartisan support but Rep. Rashida Tlaib voted “present” instead of for or against.

“We all have a responsibility to denounce sexual violence in all forms, regardless of who is responsible. War crimes cannot justify more war crimes,” Tlaib wrote on X.

Tlaib said the resolution rightly condemned Hamas but lacked language on alleged Israeli abuses of Palestinians.

While all must denounce sexual violence regardless of perpetrator, war crimes cannot justify more war crimes.

The resolution introduced by Rep. Lois Frankel condemned specific Hamas acts from October 2023 and called on nations to criminalize sexual violence and hold all perpetrators accountable.

“Today, with overwhelming bipartisan support, we’ve passed my resolution in the House condemning Hamas’s use of rape and sexual violence on and since October 7th. Our message is loud and clear: these acts are not tools of war, and we condemn them,” Rep. Lois Frankel wrote.

418 members voted for it while Tlaib alone voted present.

Some criticized Tlaib for opposing resolutions supporting Israel following her censure last year over Hamas attacks comments.

They said it was shameful and disturbing she couldn’t condemn the Hamas crimes.
“For more than 129 days, Israel has defended itself from Hamas’ terror. Hamas committed despicable crimes on October 7th. It’s shameful [Tlaib] wouldn’t support a resolution condemning rape and sexual violence committed by Hamas,” Rep. Kevin Hern wrote on X.

“The House just delivered a strong rebuke of Hamas’ use of rape and sexual violence as a weapon of war! Disturbingly, what should have been a unanimous vote was ruined by [Tlaib] who couldn’t bring herself to condemn these heinous acts,” Rep. Beth Van Duyne said.
