Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, was shot and killed at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church after attempting to open fire.

The Houston Police Department made an effort to use Moreno’s preferred gender pronouns, which sparked controversy.

Moreno had a history of mental health issues and sometimes used the name “Jeffrey Escalante.”

Houston Police Homicide Division Commander Chris Hassig, said, “She has utilized both male and female names, but through all of our investigation to this point – talking with individuals, interviews, documents – the Houston Police Department reports she has been identified this entire time as female.”

“We are identifying her as Genesse Moreno, female Hispanic,” continued Hassig.

Moreno entered the church with firearms and had written anti-Semitic content.

Two off-duty law enforcement personnel shot and killed Moreno, and Moreno’s 7-year-old son was critically injured in the incident.
