Vice President Kamala Harris repeated the claim that gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in America in a post addressing the Kansas City Chiefs parade shooting.
“Gun violence is the number one cause of death for children of America—not some form of illness or car accidents,” Harris wrote on X.
However, as pointed out when she made this claim previously in July 2023, CDC data shows firearm deaths for those aged 0-17 were lower than motor vehicle deaths in 2020.
Children are 27 times more likely to die in an accidental car death than in an accidental gun death, according to the CDC.
Children are also far more likely to suffer unintentional suffocation death before accidental gun deaths.
In 2020, the CDC found firearm-related deaths for children aged 0-17 were 2,281. In comparison for the same year, the number of motor vehicle deaths for the same ages was 2,503.
Children are also significantly more likely to die from accidental suffocation or car accidents than accidental gun deaths, according to CDC numbers.
Nevertheless, Harris again called on Congress and state legislators to pass gun safety legislation in the wake of the Chiefs shooting.
