The Homeland Security Secretary became the first Cabinet member to be impeached by the House in nearly 150 years, leading to discontent among Democrats.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the move as an attempt to appease Donald Trump.
Sen. Schumer said, “This sham impeachment effort is another embarrassment for House Republicans.”

“The one and only reason for this impeachment is for Speaker Johnson to further appease Donald Trump,” he continued.
“Republicans failed to present any evidence of anything resembling an impeachable offense,” added the Majority Leader.
President Biden defended the impeached official, citing his immigrant background and career, but failed to address the core issue.
Biden said, “History will not look kindly on House Republicans for their blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship that has targeted an honorable public servant in order to play petty political games.”
He added that Mayorkas “has spent more than two decades serving America with integrity in a decorated career in law enforcement and public service.”
Biden also called for support on a border plan, despite its lack of Republican backing.
The statement lacked focus on the current crisis and overlooked the potential impact of reversing previous policies.
