The Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson, Yuriy Ihnat, hailed the destruction of a Russian A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft and its supporting Il-22 as a historic event, marking the first time such an aircraft has been taken down.
This action is seen as a significant blow to the image of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime and is being applauded in the Western world.
The strike showcases the effectiveness of Western weaponry and has left Russia with few remaining aircraft.
“The destruction of the A-50, especially in conjunction with the Il-22, marks the first time in history such an aircraft has been taken down,” Ihnat said. “The Western world is applauding.”
“The Air Forces dreamed of destroying this aircraft,” Ihnat said.
“You can’t imagine the joy of those who did it, the joy at the command post. It’s truly inspiring. A high-value target was eliminated,” he said.
While the specifics of the event remain undisclosed, the operation was praised by Ukraine’s Armed Forces Chief, Valeriy Zaluzhny.
However, the downing resulted in the death of at least 11 military pilots, according to a Russian propagandist Telegram channel.
