The House failed to pass a $17.6 billion bill to provide aid to Israel, with 14 House Republicans joining Democrats to vote against it due to concerns about the cost.
Speaker Mike Johnson’s attempt to use the bill to undermine a bipartisan border bill was unsuccessful.
“Israel has a lower debt to GDP ratio than the United States,” Rep. Thomas Massie said.
“This spending package has no offsets, so it will increase our debt by $14.3 billion plus interest.”
The bill was rejected by most Democrats as an attempt to undercut a broader border security and foreign aid bill that would provide the same amount of aid to Israel.
The bill’s failure was attributed to fiscal arguments from Republicans and Democrats’ preference for the aid to be delivered via the broader national security bill.
