Hamas, negotiating through intermediaries, demanded a permanent ceasefire and the release of more Palestinian terrorists in exchange for the remaining Israeli hostages.

The U.S. supports a temporary ceasefire leading to a permanent one, aligning somewhat with Hamas. Israel has rejected the demand for a permanent ceasefire.

At least 31 hostages are confirmed dead, and up to 20 others may also be deceased.

There is internal pressure in Israel for a deal, but there are also protests against it and the transfer of aid to Gaza, with families of hostages blocking aid trucks.
