Patrick Goodman, a California child killer who caused severe injuries to his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son, has been approved for parole, sparking outrage and calls for intervention from Governor Gavin Newsom.
Despite opposition from the District Attorney’s office, parole board commissioners deemed Goodman suitable for release, prompting criticism from law enforcement and legal professionals who argue that those who harm defenseless children pose a significant danger to the community.
The decision now rests with the governor’s office, with calls for a thorough review of the case and the qualifications of parole board officials.
“We find that Mr GoodÂman does not curÂrently pose an unÂreaÂsonÂable risk to pubÂlic safety and is therefore suitable for paÂrole,” commissioner Michele Minor said.
“This is the most heinous crime there is,” former San Francisco Police officer Britt Elmore said. “It’s on a child.”
“See if they’re even fit to be in these hearings,” he said. “This is the worst of the worst, and this is supposed to be what the strictest of our laws are for.”
“A lot of people put themselves in predicaments. … A child doesn’t make those decisions,” he said. “The child’s just put there.”
“I’ve tried numerous high-profile child murders,” district attorney Jonathan Hatami said. “If you will murder a child, someone who is the most vulnerable in our society, you are a danger to our entire community.”
