Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has faced criticism for urging federal action against the popular nicotine pouch Zyn, which he labeled a threat to young people.
Schumer’s call for investigation into the product’s marketing drew backlash from some who argued there were more pressing issues, while others suggested he was overstepping.
Zyn and similar tobacco-free nicotine pouches have surged in popularity amid e-cigarette bans.

“I’m delivering a warning to parents because these nicotine pouches seem to lock their sites on young kids, teenagers and even lower, and then use the social media to hook them,” Schumer said.
“Hey, Chuck, the border is out of control, and Senate Dems are refusing to take up H.R. 2. Maybe we can start there instead of trying to ban Zyn and mess with consumers’ rights,” Republican Rep. Lisa McClain wrote on X.

“Chuck Schumer now wants the government to crack down on Zyn calling it a ‘pouch full of problems,'” Greg Price wrote.
“Mr. Schumer, this will be your one and only warning on behalf of all the fellas: Do not cross that Rubicon. You will have reaped the whirlwind and you will pay the price,” he wrote.

The Biden administration’s push for stricter e-cigarette regulations and a proposed menthol cigarette ban were linked to Schumer’s stance by the National Republican Senate Committee as evidence of an overreaching “nanny state” within the Democratic Party.
