Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blames “checked-out” voters for his failed White House campaign, particularly Iowa caucusgoers who rallied behind Trump despite not liking him.
Despite his attacks on Trump, DeSantis endorsed him and criticized the “old Republican guard.”
The primary reasons for his loss have been largely attributed to his attacks on LGBTQ+ community, libraries, abortion rights, and Disney.
“They did not want to see Trump nominated again, but they had basically been told that it was inevitable, that it was over,” DeSantis said.
“He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that [former South Carolina Gov.] Nikki Haley represents,” he said.
“To me he never looked very happy,” an Iowa political operative said.
His campaign spent millions with little change in poll numbers, and his lack of enthusiasm and awkward behavior were criticized.
DeSantis expressed willingness to run again in 2028.
