Former South Carolina governor and Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley has faced criticism over her claims of experiencing racism growing up in the “Deep South” due to her Indian heritage.

Conservatives have questioned her statements, with some pointing to her appearance in her youth as evidence against her claims.

Despite these controversies, Haley has emphasized her resilience and determination, positioning herself as a symbol of the American dream.

“We were the only Indian family in our small southern town. I was teased every day for being brown,” Haley said.

“So anyone who wants to question it can go back and look at what I’ve said on how hard it was to grow up in the deep south as a brown girl,” she added.

“If Nikki Haley is a brown woman then I’m a White Man with blue eyes and blond hair,” Black comedian Terrence K. Williams joked online.

“I came to America from Bombay, India at age 17 and have spent the past four decades in the most conservative precincts of American life,” filmmaker Dinesh D’souza wrote on X. “I have never once been teased for being brown, and I’m browner than Nikki Haley. So what’s going on here?”

Her strategy may be aimed at appealing to independent voters with Democratic leanings, as she seeks support in the New Hampshire primary.

“I mean, yes, I’m a brown girl who grew up in a small rural town in South Carolina, who became the first female minority governor in history, who became a U.N. ambassador, and who is now running for president. If that’s not the American dream, I don’t know what is,” Haley said.

“You can sit there and give me all the reasons why you think I can’t do this. I will continue to defy everybody on why we can do this. And we will get it done.”
