Former baseball star Steve Garvey is running for the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s former seat in California, a traditionally blue state.
Despite California’s historical Democratic leanings, Garvey is polling well, showing significant support.
The state’s jungle primary system presents a challenge, requiring Garvey to beat other Democrats in March and then compete in the general election.
“There’s a saying that life is God’s gift to us and what we do with it is our gift to God. Well, this is a way for myself and our family to give back by the visibility and the currency of how people have treated me all through these years,” Garvey said.
California’s current issues, including homelessness and cost of living, have led to speculation about a potential shift in voting patterns.
Garvey’s candidacy represents a challenge to the Democratic majority in the state.
