The New York Court of Appeals rejected former President Donald Trump’s appeal of a gag order in his civil fraud trial, citing no “substantial constitutional question.”
Trump’s lawyers argued against the restriction of his speech, but the court dismissed the challenge.
The gag order was initially imposed after Trump shared a photo of a judge’s law clerk with Senator Chuck Schumer, leading to false claims.
“On the Court’s own motion, appeal dismissed, without costs, upon the ground that no substantial constitutional question is directly involved,” the court wrote. “Motion for a stay dismissed as academic.”
Despite being barred from giving a formal closing argument, Trump briefly spoke in court, calling the proceedings “a fraud on me.”
“We have a situation where I am an innocent man,” Trump said. “I’m being persecuted by someone running for office and I think you have to go outside the bounds.”
The State Attorney General, Letitia James, seeks to permanently bar Trump from New York’s real estate industry and impose financial penalties for alleged fraud.
