The Elias Law Group, representing Democratic voters, has filed a lawsuit asking the liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court to invalidate the state’s congressional maps, following a recent decision to throw out state legislative maps.
The lawsuit argues that the previous “least change” approach led to partisan unfairness and seeks to create fair congressional districts.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court faces a tight deadline to consider the challenge, with implications for the upcoming elections.
“Wisconsin is a purple state, but our current congressional district maps don’t reflect that,” Rep. Mark Pocan said. The lawsuit looks to “make our congressional districts fair to all Wisconsinites.”
Republicans have opposed the lawsuit, and the National Republican Congressional Committee accused Democrats of gerrymandering for political gain.
“The newly bought and paid for liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court faces yet another test of the public’s trust: do the right thing by leaving the current, constitutional maps in place, or once again abandon sound judgment by catering to their left-wing out-of-state donors,” Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brian Schimming stated.
“Wisconsin Democrats can’t win these House seats on their own, so they’re focusing on gerrymandering to help themselves instead of running on policies that help Wisconsinites,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Mike Marinella said.
The lawsuit was filed by a law firm chaired by Marc Elias, known for representing Democratic causes in election-related lawsuits.
