The New England Patriots have named Jerod Mayo, a former Patriots linebacker and current linebackers coach, as their new head coach, following Bill Belichick’s departure after a 24-year tenure.
Mayo, who had been projected as the favorite to succeed Belichick, has a strong history with the franchise, having won a Super Bowl and earning accolades during his playing career.
The Patriots had a contractual succession plan in place, allowing them to swiftly hire Mayo as their new coach. (Trending: GOP Rep. Mace Clashes Directly With Hunter Biden At Hearing)
“Well, he’s definitely a strong candidate to be the heir apparent, but we have some other good people in our system,” team owner Robert Kraft said.
Mayo’s appointment comes as the team aims to rebound from a challenging season and looks to secure a new general manager.
At 37, Mayo becomes the youngest head coach in the NFL and has expressed a desire to lead a franchise, with New England being his preferred choice.
“Hopefully as you guys all know, one day I want to be a head coach,” Mayo said.
“Where that is, I don’t know. But at the same time, I would say I have a lot of love for New England. I have a lot of love for the fans, the people around the building. And you know, my family, they love it here as well. So that would be great if I could stay here and continue to progress throughout my career, but we’ll see.”
