A Nebraska lawmaker has introduced a bill to include nitrogen asphyxiation as a method of execution in addition to lethal injection.
The bill would leave the decision to prison officials and aims to make the death penalty more humane.
This move comes as Alabama seeks to carry out the first execution by nitrogen gas, facing legal challenges over potential violations of constitutional provisions against cruel and unusual punishment. (Trending: Joe Biden Sets New Presidential Record)
“We know that the death penalty is the law of the land in Nebraska,” Sen. Loren Lippincott said.
“It’s the will of the people. I introduced this as a way to do the death penalty humanely.”
“Everything gets challenged in court,” he said.
“For me, it was a sensation of being sleepy and a warm feeling,” he said.
“Basically, you just go to sleep.”
The bill’s passage remains uncertain, and opposition exists, with concerns raised about the method’s potential pain and the lack of available lethal injection drugs in Nebraska.
