China has imposed sanctions on five American defense-related companies in response to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and U.S. sanctions on Chinese entities.

The sanctions freeze the companies’ property in China and prohibit business with them.

The move comes ahead of Taiwan’s presidential election and amid tensions over the island’s relationship with China. (Trending: U.S. State Passes Personal Pronoun Ban)

The U.S. approved a military package for Taiwan, prompting China’s response.

The Foreign Ministry wrote, “The Chinese government remains unwavering in our resolve to safeguard national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity and protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies and citizens,” in a statement.

The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency wrote, “The proposed sale will improve the recipient’s capability to meet current and future threats by enhancing operational readiness,” in a press release.

The situation reflects the ongoing U.S.-China tensions over Taiwan, a major point of conflict.
