Right-wing attacks on Brazil’s Congress and the U.S. Capitol, both prompted by leaders questioning election losses, have seen far different backlash following the events.

In Brazil, the former president has faded into irrelevance, while in the U.S., support for the former president’s campaign is surging.

The contrast in reactions have been largely attributed to the vastly different political systems and media landscapes. (Trending: First Moon Mission In 50 Years Blasts Off)

Brazil has resolutely rejected the attack, partly due to a powerful Supreme Court, which has led to numerous convictions.

Brazilian leaders “publicly, clearly, unambiguously accepted the results of the election and did exactly what democratic politicians are supposed to do,” Harvard professor Steven Levitsky said. “That is strikingly different from how Republicans responded.”

“There is a consensus in our country, among the political class, to condemn these acts,” right-wing politician Ciro Nogueira said. “I think it’s really unfortunate that a portion of American politicians applaud this type of protest.”

“The United States hasn’t lived through a dictatorship, a period of authoritarianism,” he said. “We never want that to return in our country.”

“If it hadn’t been for the strong reaction from the institutions, we wouldn’t be talking here today. The Supreme Court would be closed and I, as the investigations have shown, would not be here,” Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes said.

“I think there are problems with the Supreme Court’s actions,” law professor Emilio Peluso said.

“But I think the Supreme Court had to give a firm response to what happened on Jan. 8.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. has preferred to leave judgments to voters, and Trump’s claims have gained momentum.
