Left-wing activists in Florida have gathered enough signatures to put an abortion rights initiative, Floridians Protecting Freedom, on the ballot.

The initiative aims to protect abortion rights up to viability or when necessary for the patient’s health.

“Except as provided in Article X, Section 22, no law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider,” the initiative reads. It would require 60% voter approval to take effect.

The state Supreme Court will determine whether the measure will appear on the 2024 ballot.

This reflects a broader trend of abortion-related ballot measures across the country following the Supreme Court’s decision to return power over abortion laws to individual states.

“What Ohio did was, it took a lot of people who were doubtful and … didn’t really want to believe what the numbers were telling them and gave them permission to believe that this was possible,” Florida Women’s Freedom Coalition executive director Anna Hochkammer said.
