Colorectal cancer is increasing among people under 50, with cases nearly doubling since 1995.
The cause of this rise is unknown, and it is primarily affecting the left side of the colon or adjacent rectum.
While the overall mortality rate from colorectal cancer has declined, it has increased among patients under 50 and Native Americans younger than 65. (Trending: Trump Announces Heartbreaking Melania-Related Health Update)
According to The Washington Post, “The rise in early-onset colorectal cancer is driven primarily by cancer forming on the patient’s left side, in the lowest portion of the colon or the adjacent rectum, said Rebecca Siegel, senior scientific director of surveillance research for the American Cancer Society.”
“These cases tend to be more advanced than cancers detected in older people,” added the outlet.
“In summary, despite continued overall declines, CRC is rapidly shifting to diagnosis at a younger age, at a more advanced stage, and in the left colon/rectum,” concluded the study’s authors.
Possible factors such as obesity and lifestyle have been suggested, but the increase remains a medical mystery.
The need for increased education and awareness about colorectal cancer, similar to breast cancer, has been emphasized.
Whitney Jones, a gastroenterologist, said, “This is a dramatic increase. And the trends are not going away.”
“We need to educate all people around colorectal cancer, similar to how we educate women around breast cancer,” added the expert.
