Rolls Royce is considering the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Ukraine to decentralize its power supply network.
The plan involves converting former coal-fired power stations to nuclear using the SMR technology, with discussions underway with Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov.
This move aims to reduce dependency on Russian-produced fossil fuels, which currently includes nuclear fuel. (Trending: Obama Reveals His Fear For Joe Ahead Of 2024)
Russia’s dominance in nuclear fuel production has raised concerns, leading to proposed bans on importing Russian uranium in the United States.
The SMR deployment in Ukraine is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on Russian energy sources.
“We are trying to find a way to install these SMRs,” said chief executive of Akhmetov’s DTEK engineering business Maxim Timchenko.
“From our side, we have quite a big capacity of coal-fired power stations and we are in discussions with Rolls-Royce SMR to convert [them].”
