A massive solar flare caused radio interference for two hours in parts of the U.S. and other sunlit areas.
This event, observed by a NASA telescope, is believed to be one of the largest solar radio events recorded.
Scientists are monitoring the sun for a possible coronal mass ejection, which could lead to disruptions in high-frequency radio signals and northern lights displays, but it poses no safety threat to people on Earth. (Trending: Obama Reveals His Fear For Joe Ahead Of 2024)
The NASA telescope reportedly observed a huge flare exploding on the sun that created a “massive radio burst,” that caused multiple hours of radio interference “in parts of the U.S. and other sunlit parts of the world,” according to the AP.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) scientists stated that the flare was “likely one of the largest solar radio events ever recorded.”
“These impacts were felt from one end of the Nation to the other,” said the NOAA.
NOAA warned that they are monitoring a section of the sun that may experience flares “that might be directed at Earth.”
The NOAA’s Shawn Dahl warned, “A coronal mass ejection could result in a geomagnetic storm.”
“Making it possible for high-frequency radio signals at higher latitudes to become disrupted,” he added.
Dahl wrote in a statement, “Any space weather event coming from the sun will not harm you as long as you’re on the surface of the planet.”
“There are industries that could be impacted though, like our technologies — GPS accuracy, communication issues as we experienced during the event yesterday,” explained the scientist.
