The Ohio Senate passed a bill to protect children from transgender surgeries and prevent males from competing in women’s sports.

The bill would ban certain surgeries and hormone treatments for children with gender dysphoria, with exceptions for those already on medication.

It also aims to protect parents who oppose their child’s gender transition. (Trending: Joe Biden Impeachment Formalized As Republicans Unite)

“Certainly the parents are the most important decision-maker in a child’s life. But there are things where it’s important for the state to step in and protect the child,” Sen. Matt Huffman said.

“Children everywhere deserve to grow up with their bodies and endocrine systems intact,” detransitioner Morgan Keller said.

“The passing of [the legislation] is a significant step in fighting against an ideology that says otherwise.”

The governor has not yet decided whether to sign the bill, but if vetoed, the Republican supermajority could likely override it.

This legislation aligns with similar laws in over 20 other states.

“This issue is best addressed outside of government through individual sports leagues and athletic associations, including the Ohio High School Athletic Association, who can tailor policies to meet the needs of their member athletes and member institutions,” Mike DeWine said in 2021.
