CNN’s report on Israel using “dumb bombs” in Gaza was criticized by an Israeli government spokesman, who noted that the article buried the fact that Israel was using technology to turn these bombs into guided munitions.
CNN reported that “nearly half of the Israeli munitions dropped on Gaza are imprecise ‘dumb bombs,’ US intelligence assessment finds.”
Critics saw the story as evidence against Israel’s claim to avoid targeting civilians, and some linked it to President Joe Biden’s criticism of Israel’s “indiscriminate bombing.”
However, it was revealed that the US provides Israel with systems to transform “dumb” bombs into “smart” ones, and Israel employs techniques to make unguided bombs accurate.
The Israeli spokesman emphasized their efforts to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza, where Hamas hides.
Israeli spokesman Eylon Levy said CNN refuted its own main argument by reporting:
“But the US also provides Israel with systems that can transform those dumb bombs into ‘smart’ ones, including the Joint Direct Attack Munitions guidance system and the Spice Family Gliding Bomb Assemblies,” CNN admitted.
“The US has provided approximately 3,000 JDAMS to Israel since October 7, CNN previously reported, and told Congress last month that it planned to transfer $320 million worth of the Spice Family kits.”
In contrast to the CNN report, ABC News reported that Israel is using “a historically high level of precision weapons usage in urban warfare” against Hamas.
